Portland to Neskowin is a little over two hours if the road gods are kind and closer to three if you leave Portland at 4pm on a Friday in August. The distance is about 95 miles. The question is not how far, it is which way, and when. We drive it constantly, so here is the honest version.
The standard route: 99W to 18 to 101
Take I-5 south to the OR-99W exit in Tigard, follow 99W through Sherwood, Newberg, and Dundee, pick up OR-18 near Dayton, and ride 18 west past McMinnville, through Grand Ronde and the Van Duzer Corridor to Highway 101 at Otis. Turn north on 101 and Neskowin is about ten miles up, on your left. Total: roughly 2 hours 15 minutes with clear roads.
Notes: the Newberg-Dundee Bypass helps but the bottleneck at Dundee is still real on Friday afternoons. The Van Duzer Corridor is a winding 20-mile stretch through old growth with no cell service and no passing. Just relax into it. Spirit Mountain Casino at Grand Ronde is your last easy gas and restroom before the coast.
The shortcut: OR-22 to Hebo
If you want to skip Lincoln City entirely, stay on OR-18 to Valley Junction (just past Grand Ronde), take OR-22 west toward Hebo, and then 101 south about eight miles to Neskowin. It is a quieter two-lane road through the Coast Range with a couple of steep grades. Time is about the same as the standard route, sometimes a few minutes shorter, and you get to see a lot of trees.
Variation: OR-130, the Little Nestucca Highway, branches off OR-22 and drops you onto 101 near Oretown, which is just north of Neskowin. It is narrow and slow but very pretty. Skip it in the dark or in ice.
The scenic option: 26 to 6 to 101 south
Take US-26 west out of Portland, then OR-6 through the Tillamook State Forest to Tillamook, then 101 south through Hebo to Neskowin. This is longer, around 2 hours 45 minutes, but it is the way to go if you want to stop at Tillamook Creamery or make a loop of your trip. Coming from the west side of Portland or Hillsboro it is not as much of a detour as it looks.
When to leave
- Friday: before 1pm or after 7pm. The 3 to 6pm window through Tigard and Dundee can add 45 minutes to an hour.
- Saturday morning: leave by 9. Traffic is fine but you want the afternoon at the beach.
- Sunday return: leave the coast by 11am or after 5pm. The eastbound 18 crawl through McMinnville around 2 to 4pm is a classic.
- Midweek: any time. This is the secret to the coast.
Stops worth making
McMinnville's downtown Third Street is a good lunch detour with plenty of wine country options. In Grand Ronde, the casino has a gas station and clean bathrooms. Once on 101, the Neskowin Trading Company has groceries, wine, and a deli, and it is the only store in the village, so arrive with a plan. Hours are shorter in winter.

Winter and storm season driving
The Coast Range passes on 18, 22, and 6 all top out under 1,000 feet, so real snow is rare, but it happens a few times each winter and black ice on the shaded curves is common in cold snaps. Check TripCheck before you leave. Wind and downed trees are the more common problem in storm season; 101 and 18 close for a few hours now and then. Finding Neskowin
Neskowin is small and easy to miss at highway speed. Coming north on 101 from Otis, watch for the Neskowin sign and the turn toward the beach at Hawk Avenue. Coming south from Hebo, it is the same turn on your right. From there it is a couple of blocks to everything. If you drive past the golf course you have gone too far, but only by a minute.
