People ask us Neskowin vs Manzanita more than any other question, usually while they're looking at both homes with two browser tabs open. The honest answer is that they're an hour apart on Highway 101 and they don't feel like the same coast at all. One is a village you could miss from the road. The other is a real town with one good street. We keep a home in each, and we'd be glad to spend a weekend at either, but for different reasons.
Neskowin is small on purpose
Neskowin is a cluster of houses, a creek, a general store, a cafe and a beach. That's most of it, and that's the point. Proposal Rock sits just offshore where Neskowin Creek meets the sand, and at a good low tide you can walk out to the ghost forest, the stumps of a 2,000-year-old spruce forest that the sea buried and then uncovered. Check the tide table before you go; a minus tide in winter, ideally in the morning, is when it's worth the walk. Bring boots you don't care about.
The beach itself is long, quiet and rarely busy, even in August. Fog moves through in the afternoon and clears again by evening. We tend to walk south toward the rocks in the morning with coffee from Hawk Creek Cafe, and north toward Nestucca Bay in the afternoon when the wind lays down. If you want a proper hike, Cascade Head is ten minutes south; the lower trailhead is open year-round and the meadow at the top looks straight down the Salmon River estuary.

Manzanita has a street, and a mountain
Manzanita is seven miles of beach with Neahkahnie Mountain standing over the north end. Laneda Avenue runs from the highway straight down to the sand, and it's lined with the things a small coast town should have: a bookstore, a bakery, a wine shop, a couple of good places to eat, a pub, a grocery. You can spend a whole rainy afternoon on that one street and not feel like you're killing time.
The hiking is a step up from Neskowin. The Neahkahnie Mountain trail from the south trailhead is about three miles round trip and steep enough to earn the view. Oswald West State Park is just north, and Short Sand Beach, a fifteen-minute walk from the parking lot through old-growth spruce, is where the surfers go. Nehalem Bay State Park, on the spit south of town, has flat paved paths for bikes and a launch for kayaks, and when the crab are running it's a good afternoon.
Our home here, Puffin Lane, sits above the golf course with the mountain out the upstairs windows, three covered porches, a cedar hot tub, and a separate yoga studio. It's about an eight to ten minute walk to the beach. Seven people is the limit on the property, which suits couples traveling together, a girls' weekend, or a few generations of one family.
Where we eat, in each
In Neskowin, breakfast is Hawk Creek Cafe, and dinner is mostly at home. We cook. The Neskowin Trading Company covers what you forgot. When we want a night out we drive fifteen minutes to Pacific City for Pelican Brewing and watch the dory boats come up onto the sand at Cape Kiwanda.
In Manzanita, the bakery on Laneda opens early and sells out of the good things by mid-morning. We pick up a loaf and something for the porch and go back down the hill later for dinner. Left Coast Siesta for a casual night, the pub when it's raining sideways, and the Manzanita farmers market on Friday afternoons in summer for whatever's in season.
How we'd choose
Go to Neskowin if the trip is about the two of you, and the plan is to walk, read, soak, cook, and go to bed early. Go to Manzanita if you're bringing a few more people, want a real hike, a real walk into town, and a house with enough porches that everyone can find their own corner. Both towns get the same weather, the same whales in December and March, the same storms in January. Neither one is a resort, which is why we bought here.
