Spending christmas oregon coast style means trading a crowded living room for seven miles of nearly empty beach, a fire, and the real possibility of a storm rolling in on the 25th. We have spent a few in Manzanita. Here is how to do it well, including the logistics nobody mentions until you find the grocery store closed.
What Christmas week actually feels like
Quiet. The summer crowds are a memory, and even the fall locals-season buzz has settled. Laneda Avenue puts up lights, the town tree gets lit in early December, and a few shops keep holiday hours. Daylight is short, roughly 7:45am to 4:45pm, which sounds grim and is actually wonderful: long mornings with coffee, an afternoon beach walk, and dark by the time the fire is going. Weather is a coin flip between calm gray, sideways rain, and the occasional stunning clear cold day when Neahkahnie Mountain looks close enough to touch.
The grocery rule
Manzanita has a couple of small markets on and near Laneda, and they are good, but they close early on Christmas Eve and are closed Christmas Day. The bigger stores in Tillamook (Fred Meyer, Safeway) are 30 minutes south. Do your main shop before the 24th, ideally in Portland or Tillamook on the way in. Check your rental's kitchen list so you are not buying a second roasting pan. Puffin Lane has a full kitchen and seats seven, and we stock the basics, but the turkey is on you.
What to eat
Dungeness crab season on the Oregon coast typically opens in December, weather and testing permitting. Fresh crab from the docks at Garibaldi or a seafood market in Tillamook, cracked on newspaper with butter and a green salad, is a legitimately great Christmas Eve dinner and requires almost no cooking. Add Tillamook cheese, obviously. Tillamook Creamery is usually open most of the week but closed on the 25th, so plan the visit for the 23rd or 26th.
Restaurants in Manzanita and Nehalem run reduced hours over the holiday and several close entirely from the 24th through the 26th. Check current hours rather than guessing, and make a reservation if you find one open. Wheeler and Nehalem, a few minutes south, sometimes have something open when Manzanita does not.
Things to do between meals
- Beach walk to Nehalem Bay. From the Manzanita access, walk south along the spit toward the jetty. Empty beach, seals in the bay, dogs off leash and delirious.
- Short Sand Beach at Oswald West. A half-mile forest trail to a cove where surfers show up on Christmas morning in full wetsuits. Bring a thermos.
- Neahkahnie Mountain viewpoint. Even if you skip the hike, the pullouts on Highway 101 north of town are the best view on the coast.
- Storm watching. If a system rolls in, park at the top of Laneda or walk out with a rain shell and feel it. Then go back to the hot tub.
- Cannon Beach. Twenty-five minutes north, and its holiday lights and Haystack Rock at low tide make a good afternoon out.
- Puzzles, movies, the fire. Do not overschedule. This is the point.
Weather and packing
Late December on the north coast averages around 45 to 50 degrees with frequent rain and occasional strong wind. Pack a real rain shell, waterproof footwear, wool layers, and a swimsuit for the hot tub. If a big storm is forecast, Highway 101 near Neahkahnie can see debris and 26 can have snow at the summit, so check ODOT TripCheck before driving in or out. Bring a headlamp for beach walks that run past dusk, which at 4:45pm they will.
Traveling with the dog
Christmas week is a great time to bring the dog to Manzanita. The beach is open to dogs, it is empty, and there is nobody to judge a zoomie. Bring a towel that lives by the door and a spare leash. Our post on Manzanita in fall covers the town's off-season rhythm, and most of it holds for December.
Booking notes
Christmas week books earlier than you would think, often by October, because families lock in the dates. New Year's is the same. If you are flexible, the week between the two holidays is sometimes easier. Most homes, ours included, set minimum-night stays over the holidays.
