People ask us about the best time to visit the Oregon Coast more than almost anything else, and our honest answer is: it depends what you want, but if you make us pick, September. Here's the whole year, month by month, from people who walk the beach in Manzanita in every one of them.
The short version

- Fewest people with decent weather: late September and October
- Storm watching: November through February
- Whales: mid-December to January (southbound), late March (northbound), and a resident group all summer
- Foggiest: July, weirdly
- Cheapest: November through March, minus holidays
Spring: March to May
Unpredictable and underrated. March still storms. April flips between gorgeous and soaking within a day. May is often lovely, with wildflowers on Neahkahnie Mountain and the first real beach days. Spring break week is busy; the weeks around it are quiet. Whale Watch Week at the end of March puts volunteers at viewpoints along 101 to help you spot gray whales heading north. Summer: June to August
The busy season, and for good reason. Long days, warm afternoons, every business open, the farmers market running. But summer has a secret: fog. Hot weather inland pulls marine air onto the coast, so a 95-degree day in Portland is often a 60-degree gray morning in Manzanita. It usually burns off by early afternoon and comes back at dinner. July is the foggiest month. August is warmer and clearer. Book early, because summer weeks at the coast fill months out.
Wind is the other summer reality. It blows from the northwest most afternoons. Beach mornings are calm; beach afternoons need a windbreak. Locals go to the beach at 9 and leave at 1.
September: the one
Kids are back in school, so crowds drop the day after Labor Day. The ocean is as warm as it gets (which is still cold). The afternoon winds ease. Fog is less frequent. Sunsets go orange. Most years, September gives us the most consecutive sunny days of the year. Restaurants are open, but you can get a table. If you can travel in September, do.
October
Still often beautiful through mid-month, then the first real fall storms arrive. Mushroom season in the coast range. Fewer people. Hot tubs feel earned. Halloween weekend is quiet and fun. If you want a mix of sun and drama, October delivers both.
Storm season: November to February
Not for everyone, and completely wonderful for the right person. Big waves at Short Sand Beach and Cape Kiwanda, rain hammering the windows, the wood stove or fireplace going, a book you actually finish. You need a house with a view and a hot tub for this to work. The beach between storms is empty, dramatic, and covered in interesting debris. King tides, the highest of the year, hit in November through January and are worth timing a trip around. Rates are lowest. Just don't plan anything outdoors on a fixed schedule.

Manzanita specifically
Manzanita's seven miles of beach are dog-friendly year-round, and the town stays open in winter better than many coast towns. Our house Puffin Lane is about a ten-minute walk from the beach with a cedar hot tub, which makes it good in every month above for different reasons: post-beach soak in August, post-storm soak in January.
