UO Graduation Weekend: Book Early

Mid-June, the whole town fills, and the family that waited until May sleeps in Albany. Here's how to actually plan it.

UO graduation weekend lodging is the one thing in Eugene that behaves like a Ducks home game and a wedding at the same time. Families book a year out. Hotels set their highest rates. And every June someone messages us in May asking if we have anything left for commencement, and we have to say the honest thing: not this year, but let's fix that for next year.

When it is

The University of Oregon holds its university-wide commencement in mid-June, with school and department ceremonies spread across the surrounding days. The exact date shifts each year, so check the UO commencement page as soon as your graduate knows their year. The main ceremony has been held at Autzen Stadium in recent years, which puts a lot of families on the east side of the river that morning.

How far out to book

For a whole-house rental that sleeps six with parking and a yard, book the moment the date is published, ideally nine to twelve months ahead. Hotels will still have rooms into the winter, but rates climb and minimum-stay rules appear. Our Eugene House sleeps six across four bedrooms, has a fenced backyard, and is walkable to trails, and it's typically spoken for by fall for the following June. If you're a family that's also bringing the dog, that's another reason to move early; pet-friendly homes are the first to go.

Why a house beats two hotel rooms for this trip

  • Everyone's under one roof for the one weekend the whole family is in the same city.
  • A full kitchen means a real breakfast before a long ceremony day, and somewhere to put the leftover cake.
  • Air conditioning. June in Eugene can spike into the 90s.
  • Parking. Downtown and campus lots fill early on commencement morning.
  • Grandparents get a private suite and a quiet house, not a hallway.

Getting around on the day

Expect traffic around Autzen and the Franklin Boulevard corridor from early morning. Leave earlier than you think, or better, park once and walk or bike. The Ruth Bascom riverbank path connects Alton Baker Park to campus and downtown, and the footbridges make it a pleasant walk. Eugene also has a good bike-share system and an easy bus line down Franklin. If you have mobility concerns, check the university's shuttle and accessible parking information for the specific ceremony.

Booking dinner

Every restaurant with a tablecloth is booked for graduation Saturday. Reserve the celebration dinner when you book the house, not the week of. If you've missed the window, the food carts and breweries in the Whiteaker neighborhood take walk-ins and are more fun anyway, and a grocery run plus the house's kitchen and backyard is a genuinely good backup plan.

Filling the rest of the weekend

Commencement weekend usually overlaps with the Saturday Market downtown and with wine-tasting season in the South Willamette Valley, so build a day around either. Spencer Butte is a short, steep hike with a summit view of the whole valley, and a good way to burn off the ceremony energy. For the longer list, see things to do in Eugene, and for what the weather's likely doing, best months to visit Eugene.

If you're the graduate's parent reading this in May

Check the Eugene rentals page anyway; cancellations happen. Widen the search to Springfield and Coburg. Consider arriving Thursday and leaving Sunday morning instead of the standard Friday-to-Sunday pattern, which sometimes opens a gap. And put a reminder in your calendar for next year's date the day it's announced. Younger siblings graduate too.

It's a big weekend. The lodging shouldn't be the stressful part. Book it early, book it once, and spend the weekend being proud.

Quick answers

When is University of Oregon graduation?

UO's university-wide commencement is held in mid-June, with school and department ceremonies on the surrounding days. The exact date changes each year and is published on the university's commencement website well in advance. As soon as you know your graduate's year, check that page and book lodging immediately.

How far in advance should I book a rental for UO commencement?

Nine to twelve months for a whole house, especially one that sleeps a family and allows a dog. Hotels hold rooms longer but raise rates and impose minimum stays. Our Eugene House is typically booked for June by the previous fall. If you're late, watch for cancellations and consider Springfield or Coburg.

Is parking hard during UO graduation weekend?

Yes, especially near Autzen Stadium and campus on the morning of the main ceremony. Leave early, or park once at your rental and walk or bike the riverfront path system, which connects Alton Baker Park, campus, and downtown by footbridges. Check the university's site for accessible parking and shuttle information.
