The tide pools near Neskowin are not the most famous on the Oregon coast, and that is exactly why we like them. You will not fight a tour bus for a view of an anemone. But you do have to time it right, because a tide pool at high tide is just the ocean. Here is where we go, when we go, and what to bring.
First, the tide math
Look up a tide table for Neskowin or Cascade Head. You want a low tide of about 1.0 foot or lower, and the best days are negative tides, which show up as -0.5 or -1.2 on the chart. Plan to arrive an hour before the low and leave when the water starts coming back. That gives you a two-hour window.
Negative tides cluster around new and full moons, and the biggest ones in daylight tend to happen in late spring and summer mornings. Winter has huge tides too, but the low ones often land before dawn and the surf is rougher. Never turn your back on the water. Sneaker waves are real here.
Proposal Rock, right out front
Start at the obvious place. Proposal Rock sits at the mouth of Neskowin Creek, a few minutes' walk from The Weekender. At a good low tide you can walk around its base and find anemones, mussels, barnacles, and small crabs on the rock's ocean side. It is a modest tide pool, but it is a five-minute commute, and kids love it.
Park at the Neskowin Beach State Recreation Site lot off Highway 101 and walk across the creek. In summer the creek is ankle deep. In winter it can be knee deep and cold, so bring water shoes or accept wet socks. We wrote more about the rock itself in Proposal Rock: the walk, the tides, the story.
Cascade Head and the Salmon River mouth
Ten minutes south, Cascade Head is better known for the headland hike, but the rocky shoreline at the base near the Salmon River estuary has good pools when the tide is very low. Access is harder. You are scrambling over rocks and the footing is slick. This is the spot for adults who want fewer people and do not mind earning it.
Roads End, Lincoln City
About 20 minutes south, Roads End State Recreation Site has a proper parking lot and a wide beach. Walk north toward the headland at low tide and you reach a series of rock shelves loaded with sea stars, green anemones, and the occasional nudibranch. On a very low tide you can pass through to a hidden cove beyond the point. Watch the clock closely there, because the way back floods first.
Cape Kiwanda, Pacific City
About 15 minutes north, the south side of Cape Kiwanda has pools tucked into the sandstone. Go early in the morning, before the beach fills with dory boats and people climbing the dune. The Pelican Brewing patio is right there for afterward, which is either a bonus or the whole reason you came.
What to bring and how to behave
- Shoes with grip that can get wet. Not flip-flops.
- A tide table screenshot, since cell service drops in places.
- A layer more than you think. It is windy on the rocks even in July.
- Look with your eyes and, gently, a finger. Do not pry anything off a rock.
- Step on bare rock or sand, not on the animals. Mussels are animals.
- Leave shells and creatures where they are. Take pictures.
Making a day of it
Our favorite version: a morning minus tide at Roads End, a late breakfast in Lincoln City, then back to Neskowin for a nap and the hot tub. Or the shorter version: coffee on the deck, wander out to Proposal Rock at the low, and be back before the coffee gets cold. The pools are patient. They have been there a long time. Pick a low tide, go slow, and let your eyes adjust. The small stuff shows up after a minute of looking.
