Skinner Butte in Eugene is the hill you see from everywhere downtown, the one with the big yellow O on the side that changes color depending on who's won what. It's a 20-minute walk to the top, and it's the best way to get your bearings on day one.
Getting to the top
Two options. The lazy one: drive Skinner Butte Loop Road to the summit parking lot and walk 30 seconds. The better one: park at the base near the Shelton McMurphey Johnson House (the Victorian mansion with the wraparound porch) and take the trail up. It's steep-ish but short, maybe 15 to 20 minutes with a dog pulling you along. The trail is dirt, gets slick in winter, and is fine in sneakers.
At the top you get the whole thing: downtown, the University of Oregon and Autzen across the river, Spencer Butte to the south, and on a clear day the Three Sisters way out east. Go early for fog in the valley with the peaks poking through. Go at sunset for the obvious reasons.
The columns
On the west side of the butte there's a set of basalt columns where local climbers practice. If you climb, bring shoes and a chalk bag; the routes are short and well-used. If you don't, it's still fun to watch from the bench and pretend you could.
The loop back down
Here's the walk we recommend. From the summit, take the trail down the north side toward the Willamette River. You'll hit the riverfront path in about five minutes. Turn right (east) and follow it past the rose garden, which is worth a slow lap in June when everything is blooming and smells absurd.
Cross the DeFazio footbridge if you want to add Alton Baker Park to your loop. It's flat, dog-friendly, and has a pond with more ducks than the football team. Or skip the bridge and head south into downtown.
Downtown, on foot
- Saturday Market (April through mid-November, Saturdays): crafts, food carts, buskers, and the Farmers Market right next door. Show up around 11 before the good pastries go.
- Fifth Street Public Market: a little indoor-outdoor shopping cluster with a good coffee roaster and a few lunch options.
- The Whiteaker: a 10-minute walk west. Breweries, food trucks, murals. Ninkasi's tasting room is the anchor.
The whole loop, butte to river to downtown and back, is about three miles. Two hours if you stop for coffee and a rose garden loop. Four hours if you stop at a brewery.
Timing and logistics
Parking at the base is free and rarely full. The summit lot closes at dusk. Dogs are welcome on leash everywhere on this route. Bring water in summer; it's hotter down in the valley than the coast folks expect. In winter, the trail is muddy but very doable, and the fog burns off most days by 11.
If you're staying with us at The Eugene House, it's a short drive into downtown and your dog is already in the car by the time you've found your keys. The house has a fenced backyard for post-walk decompression and AC for the summer afternoons that this town does not warn you about.
Make it a full day
Skinner Butte is the warm-up. If you've got legs left, Spencer Butte on the south side of town is the real climb, and the Ridgeline Trail connects a bunch of the hills. It's a small hill. It just happens to show you the whole city, and it costs nothing but a little breath.
