Neskowin Beach Golf Course is a nine-hole walk through a coastal meadow with Hawk Creek wandering across it, and it might be the least stressful golf you'll ever play. There's no dress code anyone enforces. Tee times are loose. Elk show up on the fairways in the evening and everybody just waits. If you're staying in Neskowin and own a pair of shoes, you should play it once.
The course itself
It's a par 36 over about 2,600 yards from the regular tees, dating back to the 1930s. Flat and walkable start to finish, which matters if you've been hiking Cascade Head the day before. Hawk Creek cuts through several holes and will eat a ball if you get greedy. The meadow is ringed by Sitka spruce and the coastal hills, and on a clear evening the light comes in low and gold across the whole thing. It's less a championship test and more a very pleasant reason to be outside for two hours.
Don't expect country-club grooming. The greens are honest and the fairways are meadow. That's the charm. Wear waterproof shoes; the ground stays soft most of the year.
Seasonal hours and flooding
This is the important part. The course sits in a floodplain, and it closes when Hawk Creek and the winter rains take over the low ground. Practically speaking, it's open from spring through fall and shut from roughly November into March or April, depending on the year. Call ahead in the shoulder months. The number is on their sign at the entrance and on their website, and a human answers.
Summer hours run from morning until dusk. Late afternoon is our favorite tee time: the wind usually drops, the tourists are at dinner, and the elk come out.
What it costs and what you need
Green fees are modest, historically in the range of what you'd pay for a couple of good burgers, with a replay discount if you want to go around twice. They rent clubs and pull carts, so you don't need to haul a bag over from the valley. There's a small clubhouse with snacks and drinks. Cash and cards both work.
- Walk-ups are normal; weekends in July and August may have a short wait.
- Bring a few extra balls for the creek holes.
- Rain gear, even in August. This is the coast.
- Leashed dogs are usually tolerated on quiet days, but ask at the clubhouse first.
About the elk
A resident herd of Roosevelt elk moves between the Neskowin meadows and the hills behind town. They like the golf course, especially at dawn and dusk. If they're on your fairway, play the hole around them or skip it. Don't approach, don't try to hurry them, and definitely don't let a dog off leash near them. A bull elk is roughly the size of a small car and not interested in your scorecard.
Pair it with the rest of the day
The course is a short walk or two-minute drive from the beach, so the natural rhythm is beach in the morning around low tide, golf in the afternoon, hot tub at night. Where to stay
The Weekender is our little cabin in Neskowin: two bedrooms, a wood stove, a private hot tub, and the beach right out the door. It's the right size for a couple or a small group who want to play nine, walk to Proposal Rock, and not drive anywhere for two days.
Golf in Neskowin isn't about the score. It's about the meadow, the creek, and the fact that a herd of elk considers your par-4 their living room. Go play it.
