The first question we get after "do you allow dogs?" is some version of "where are the grocery stores near vacation rental Oregon homes like yours?" Fair. Nobody wants to unload the car, open the fridge, and realize the nearest milk is 40 minutes away. So here's the real shopping map for each of our homes, written by people who have done the run in the rain more times than we can count.
Eugene: you have every option
Eugene is the easy one. Our Eugene House sits in a neighborhood, not the woods, so you're a short drive from Market of Choice (the local upscale chain, great deli and bakery), Fred Meyer, Safeway, WinCo (cheapest, cash or debit only, bring your own bag energy), Trader Joe's, Whole Foods, and Costco if you brought a card and a big group.
If you want to make the shopping part of the trip, go to the Saturday Market downtown from April through November. It's produce, food carts, and live music in one block. Kiva downtown and Capella Market in south Eugene are the small local grocers with the good cheese counters. More on the town itself on our Eugene things-to-do page.
Mt. Hood Village: shop in Sandy, top up in Welches
This is where planning pays off. Wildwood Basecamp is in the Welches/Mt. Hood Village stretch of Highway 26. The closest real grocery is Hoodland Thriftway in Welches. It's a proper store, not a gas station, with a decent meat counter and a deli, but the selection is small-town and prices are mountain prices.
The move: do your big shop in Sandy on the way up. Sandy has a Fred Meyer, a Safeway, and a Grocery Outlet, and it's the last town of any size before the mountain. Coming from Portland, you'll pass through it on 26 anyway. Then use Thriftway for the things you forgot, which in our experience is always coffee filters and butter.
- Government Camp has a small general store for emergencies and hot cocoa runs, not a weekly shop.
- Cell service gets spotty east of Zigzag. Download your list before you leave Sandy.
- Winter weekends: the Sandy Fred Meyer parking lot is where everyone buys chains at 3pm on Saturday. Buy them earlier.
Neskowin: small store, big charm
Neskowin is a village, and it shops like one. The Neskowin Trading Company is a few steps from most of the neighborhood and it's the kind of place that stocks good local wine, fresh bread, deli sandwiches, ice, and firewood. It's perfect for a night or two of dinners and it's dangerously easy to spend $60 in there on "a few things." For a full week at The Weekender, you'll want more.
Chester's Thriftway in Pacific City is about 15 minutes north and covers a real weekly shop. Lincoln City, 15 to 20 minutes south, has a Safeway, a Grocery Outlet, and Kenny's IGA. If you're coming from the Portland area, McMinnville on Highway 18 is a good big-store stop before the coast range.
Also worth knowing: the Pacific City dory fleet means you can sometimes buy fish straight off a truck in the Cape Kiwanda lot. Cash, ask nicely, and bring a cooler.
Manzanita: walkable, then Tillamook for the rest
Manzanita's Laneda Avenue is genuinely walkable from Puffin Lane, and it has Manzanita Grocery & Deli (the town's everyday store) and Mother Nature's Natural Foods for produce, bulk goods, and the stuff you'd find at a co-op. Between those two and the Friday farmers market in summer, a long weekend is covered without moving the car.
For a week or a big group, Tillamook is 30 minutes south with a Fred Meyer and a Safeway. Seaside is about 30 minutes north with a Safeway. Cannon Beach has Mariner Market, which is a nice small grocery if you're already up there for the day. And yes, the Tillamook Creamery counts as a grocery stop if you're buying a block of cheddar the size of a brick, which you should.
What we stock, so you don't have to
Every one of our homes has a full kitchen: pots, pans, sharp-enough knives, a coffee maker, cooking oil, salt and pepper, and basic spices. We also leave dish soap, sponges, trash bags, paper towels, and a starter supply of coffee. We don't stock food beyond that, both because of allergies and because nobody agrees on what "the basics" are. Full details for each house are on our rentals pages and in your check-in guide.
The bring-from-home list
Learned the hard way, in order of how often guests text us about it:
- Your specific coffee. We leave some, but it's not your coffee.
- Dog food and a bowl you trust. Coast stores sell it, but not always the brand.
- Spices and sauces you'd miss. Hot sauce, soy sauce, good olive oil.
- Ziplocks and foil for leftovers and beach snacks.
- Marshmallows. Every home has somewhere to cook one.
