An Eugene to Oregon Coast day trip is one of the easiest big payoffs in the state. You leave after breakfast, drive west on Highway 126 for about 70 miles, and by 10:30 you're watching sea lions argue on a rock. Here's how we'd do it.
The drive out
Highway 126 west follows the Siuslaw River through Veneta, Noti, and Mapleton. It's two lanes, winding in spots, and you'll be behind an RV at some point. Budget 90 minutes to Florence, more on summer Saturdays. Fill your tank in Eugene. Gas in Mapleton exists but is not cheap.
Leave by 8:30. The coast is best before noon in summer, when the wind is calmer and the fog hasn't rolled back in. Coming home, the return traffic is light until about 5.
Stop one: Old Town Florence
Bay Street runs along the Siuslaw River under the big green bridge. Park once and walk. There's a good bakery, a couple of chowder spots, and the kind of gift shops that sell saltwater taffy by the pound. If you want a sit-down lunch later, note what looks good now.
Stop two: the dunes
South of town, the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area starts right off 101. The Oregon Dunes Day Use Area has a short boardwalk trail to a viewpoint where the sand goes on for miles. If you have kids or a dog with energy, Honeyman State Park has dunes that drop straight into Cleawox Lake. In summer you can rent a sandboard in Florence. In winter you just slide on your butt.
Stop three: north on 101 to Heceta Head
Twelve miles north of Florence, Heceta Head Lighthouse sits on a cliff above a cove. Park at the Devils Elbow lot ($5 day-use, or use a state parks pass), walk the half-mile up to the lighthouse, and look back south at the coastline. This is the photo. Tide pools at the cove below at low tide.
Right before it you'll pass Sea Lion Caves. It's a paid attraction with an elevator down to a sea cave full of very loud Steller sea lions. Touristy? Yes. Worth it once? Also yes, especially with kids. In summer the sea lions are often outside on the rocks instead, so ask at the desk before paying.
If you want more beach and fewer people
Keep going north past Heceta to Carl G. Washburne State Park. Big empty beach, easy parking, dogs welcome. Or turn around and head south to the South Jetty area in Florence for dune access and a long, flat, walkable beach where the Siuslaw meets the ocean.

- 10:00 Old Town Florence, coffee and pastry
- 10:45 Oregon Dunes boardwalk or Honeyman
- 12:30 lunch back on Bay Street
- 2:00 Sea Lion Caves and Heceta Head
- 4:00 start home, or push it and eat dinner in Florence
What to bring
Layers. It can be 88 in Eugene and 58 in Florence on the same July afternoon. We're serious enough about this that we wrote what to pack for the Oregon Coast even in July. Also: a towel for the dog, a state parks day pass or $5 cash, and snacks for the drive back, because everyone falls asleep on Highway 126 except the driver.
Home base in Eugene
Our Eugene House is a good launch pad for this. Four bedrooms, a fenced yard for the sandy dog, air conditioning for the return to valley heat, and a full kitchen for the fish you bought in Florence and now need to cook.
