An Oregon coast golf vacation rental trip is a different animal from a golf resort trip. Nobody comes to the north coast to grind 36 holes a day in a cart. You come to play a relaxed nine in the morning with the ocean over your shoulder, then walk the dog on the beach, then sit in a hot tub and talk about the one good shot you hit. If that sounds right, here's how to plan it.
Start with the course that's out the back door
Our Puffin Lane house sits on the Manzanita Golf Course. That's not marketing shorthand for "near." You can see the course from the house. It's a nine-hole, par-3-and-4 layout that's been a local fixture for decades, walkable, affordable, and blissfully unpretentious. Rental clubs are usually available, tee times are casual, and the pace is "whenever you get there."
The house itself sleeps 7 with 4 bedrooms and 3 baths, a king suite with its own bathroom for whoever booked the trip, a cedar hot tub, and a yoga studio for the non-golfer who wants their own kind of morning. Two blocks to seven miles of dog-friendly beach. This is the golf house.
The courses worth the drive north
Gearhart Golf Links, about 40 minutes north, is the one to make a day of. It's one of the oldest courses in the West, a true links layout in the dunes with wind, fescue, and firm turf. Walk it. Have lunch at the clubhouse. It's the closest thing the north coast has to a bucket-list round without driving to Bandon.
Seaside Golf Course, on the way to Gearhart, is a flat, friendly nine that's good for a mixed-ability group and kids who are learning. Cheap, easy, and there's a beach a few blocks away for the people who bail after six holes.
The courses worth the drive south
Heading down 101, Alderbrook in Tillamook is a relaxed nine in a dairy valley, a good stop paired with the Tillamook Creamery. Farther south, Neskowin Beach Golf Course is a lovely, low-lying nine right by the ocean that closes in winter because it floods, which tells you everything about how close to the water it is. It reopens in spring, and if you're staying at our Neskowin cabin, The Weekender, it's minutes away.
Beyond that, Salishan in Gleneden Beach and Chinook Winds in Lincoln City are the full-18 resort options if someone in the group insists on a real scorecard.
Weather: play the morning
Coast wind builds through the afternoon, especially in summer. The calmest, prettiest golf is between 8 and 11am. Fog can sit until 10 or later in July and August; it's cool, it burns off, and it makes the greens soft. In winter, storms come in bands, and you can absolutely play a dry, brilliant round on a January morning between systems. Pack a rain shell, a beanie, and a towel for your grips. Umbrellas are for people who haven't met coast wind yet.
A three-day golf-and-beach plan
- Day 1: Arrive, drop bags at Puffin Lane, walk to Laneda Avenue for coffee. Late-afternoon nine at Manzanita to shake out the drive. Hot tub.
- Day 2: Early drive to Gearhart. Play 18, lunch, then stop at Cannon Beach on the way back to see Haystack Rock at low tide.
- Day 3: Sunrise beach walk with the dog. Morning nine at Manzanita again. Afternoon at Short Sand Beach watching the surfers, or the Tillamook Creamery if it's raining.
For the non-golfers
The person who didn't come to golf gets Manzanita: seven miles of beach, Neahkahnie Mountain for a real hike with a real view, Nehalem Bay State Park for kayaking and crabbing, and Laneda Avenue's shops and food.
