A 48-Hour Manzanita Weekend

Friday crab dinner, Saturday mountain and beach, Sunday surf check and a slow drive home. Hour by hour.

A good Manzanita weekend itinerary has a lot of white space in it. The town is small, the beach is seven miles long, and the best moments are the unplanned ones. But if you've never been, it helps to know what's possible in 48 hours. This is how we'd spend a Friday-to-Sunday, with real times and real logistics.

Friday, 4pm: arrive and stock up

From Portland it's about two hours via Highway 26 and 53, or Highway 6 through Tillamook if you want to stop at the Creamery for cheese on the way. Either way, do your big grocery run before Manzanita; the local market is fine for basics but small.

Check in at Puffin Lane, two blocks from the sand. Drop bags, let the dog out, and walk straight to the beach for the last hour of light. Manzanita faces west and sunset from the sand is the best free show on the coast.

Friday, 7pm: crab dinner at the house

Stop at Jetty Fishery or Kelly's Brighton Marina on Nehalem Bay on your way in and pick up cooked Dungeness crab. Add a loaf from Bread and Ocean if you arrived before they closed, butter, lemon, a bottle from the grocery's wine aisle. Eat on the deck. Then the cedar hot tub. You've done nothing and it already feels like vacation.

Saturday, 8am: pastries, then up the mountain

One person to Bread and Ocean for pastries and coffee before the line grows. Then drive ten minutes north to the Neahkahnie Mountain south trailhead off Highway 101. The hike is about 1.5 miles and 900 feet of steady climbing to a summit at 1,680 feet that looks straight down on Manzanita beach. Allow two hours round trip. Dogs on leash are fine.

Fog in the morning often burns off by the time you summit. If it doesn't, the trail through the spruce is still worth it.

Saturday, 11:30am: Short Sand Beach

You're already at Oswald West State Park. Park at the main lot and take the flat half-mile trail to Short Sand Beach. Watch surfers in the cove, poke around the tide pools if the tide is low, and eat the sandwiches you packed. Or walk back up and drive to Left Coast Siesta for burritos.

Saturday, 2pm: the long beach

This is the white space. Walk out from the end of Laneda and go as far as you want in either direction. North toward the mountain for rocks and tide pools; south toward Nehalem Bay State Park for empty sand. Kites if it's windy. Fetch until the dog quits. Nap on a blanket.

Alternate plan for the energetic: rent bikes and ride the paved loop at Nehalem Bay State Park, then ride the hard-packed beach back to town at low tide.

Saturday, 6pm: dinner out

Book this before you leave home. Neah-Kah-Nie Bistro for a proper dinner, Blackbird for the chef-driven small-room experience, or Marzano's for pizza if you're there when they open. We wrote up the full list of Manzanita restaurants with the honest wait-time notes. After dinner, MacGregor's Whiskey Bar has a fireplace, or head back for round two in the hot tub.

Sunday, 8:30am: breakfast and a surf check

Yolk for a sit-down breakfast, or Wanda's in Nehalem for cinnamon rolls. Then one more beach walk. If the swell's up, drive back to Short Sand to watch the surfers, or if you've got a board, get in. It's the most beginner-friendly break on the north coast and the cove blocks most of the wind.

Sunday, 11am: checkout and the slow way home

Check out, then take your time. Options:

  • Nehalem Bay kayaking — rentals in Wheeler, a calm paddle on the bay, seals if you're lucky.
  • Cannon Beach — 20 minutes north for Haystack Rock and a different beach town's shops.
  • Tillamook Creamery — 30 minutes south for ice cream and a cooler of cheese for the road.
  • Manzanita Golf — nine holes right behind the house if you'd rather stay put. We covered the course separately.

The adjustable parts

Storm season (November to March) flips this schedule: skip the summit, watch waves from the house, read by the fire, hit the beach between squalls. Summer adds the Friday farmers market and long light until 9pm. Fall is the sweet spot: warm, dry, empty.

Check dates on our Manzanita rentals page and book direct to skip the platform fees. Then leave half the weekend unscheduled. Manzanita is good at filling it.

Quick answers

How long is the drive from Portland to Manzanita?

About two hours without stops, via Highway 26 west then Highway 53 south, or via Highway 6 through Tillamook. Friday afternoon traffic leaving Portland can add 30 to 45 minutes. The Highway 6 route lets you stop at the Tillamook Creamery and a full grocery store before arriving.

Is the Neahkahnie Mountain hike hard?

Moderate. From the south trailhead off Highway 101 it's roughly 1.5 miles and 900 feet of climbing on a well-maintained switchback trail through spruce forest, about two hours round trip. Kids from age seven or so handle it fine. The summit view looks straight down on Manzanita beach and Nehalem Bay.

What is the best time of year for a Manzanita weekend?

September and early October: warm afternoons, low wind, fewer people, and restaurants that still have full hours. Summer is busiest with the longest days. Winter storm season is a different kind of great, with big waves and an empty town, but plan on rain and check restaurant days since several close midweek.
